Milk Pudding (Muhallebi)

Milk Pudding (Muhallebi)

Milk pudding (Muhallebi) is one of the easiest and most versatile desserts. A staple in Turkish and Cypriot cuisine, Muhallebi can be customized to fit any occasion, mood, or taste. Sweetened milk is boiled and, with the help of a thickening agent, transformed into a light and creamy pudding that's served as is or garnished with any combination of nuts, jams, fruits, or syrups.

Recipes vary quite a bit from one person or region to another, so certainly experiment.

Pin-up Pastries: A Review

Macarons

Macarons, macarons, macarons... you are always on my mind!

I was planning on baking macarons this weekend, but since they're pretty much all I've been craving for a couple of weeks, and I couldn't wait any longer, I decided to head over to Pin-up Pastries and pick up a few. Located on the famous Ventura Blvd in Sherman Oaks, CA, Pin-up Pastries is a tiny storefront that seems to focus primarily on special orders and catering parties or events. When researching the business on Yelp, I read several reviews that mentioned croissants, cookies, cupcakes, etc., but the only items I saw in store were french macarons. According to the lady working there today, all other pastries and baked goods have to be ordered 48 hours prior. Since all I wanted were Macarons anyway, I was happy.

There are about 10-15 flavors available, including coffee, pistachio, salted caramel, passion fruit, lemon, raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, praline, champagne, and so on. Apparently, they also offer Nutella, pumpkin spice and mint n' chip, which I actually wish they'd had on hand today. I guess another trip is in order.

I purchased four macarons and have only tried the raspberry one so far. The lemon, salted caramel, and praline ones, I'm saving for later. At about twice the size of traditional french macarons, they're priced fairly reasonably. Perfectly crunchy on the outside; creamy and airy on the inside... what more could you ask for?
